Having a qualified operator is the most important thing you can do with a wire rope hoist after following all recommended inspection and repair procedures. A qualified operator should have ample training and certification, not just show up and start running the crane. It is important only to allow a qualified operator to run the hoist or crane. Often others such as fork lift drivers or outside truckers may try to operate the crane in order to speed things up. This can be extremely dangerous as they are not familiar with overhead crane safety practices. If necessary, lock up the operator control devices to prevent outsiders from running the crane.
